Editors Note: We have updated this post as of December 2019 to reflect some of the latest findings on sea buckthorn oil that were not available when the post was originally written.

How do you use sea buckthorn berry oil on your skin? This bright orange oil can be a bit perplexing for new users. No need to fear, we have created this guide to help you use sea buckthorn berry oil topically.

Why Should you try a Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil Mask?

Sea buckthorn berry oil can work wonders on skin because of its unique chemical properties. With omega 7, antioxidants, and a network of phytonutrients, this oil can help restore moisture, support aging skin, and even support cellular function.

Omega 7 is extremely rare in nature, and even more so in the plant world. After thousands of years in use in Asia and Europe, science finally figured out why the small orange berries from sea buckthorn trees were so amazing for health- omega 7 and a plethora of other nutrients.

So Many Lipids-Sterols, Liposomes, Ceramides

Sea buckthorn berry oil is made up of a group of complex lipids which work in the skin to support healthy function. It contains sterols, which support the protective barrier of the epidermis. These sterols help retain moisture on a cellular level which means that the oil can help restore firmness and elasticity in our skin.

It contains liposomes, which help the nutrients move through the skin, delivering nutrition to ceramides. In turn, ceramides help hydrate, support the skin’s natural regenerative properties, and help smooth the external appearance of skin.

Other lipids that can be found in sea buckthorn berry oil are glycolipids and phospholipids. These are relevant to skincare because they can help slow inflammation, support cell health, and ultimately help the skin to regenerate itself.

A recent study even showed that sea buckthorn oil helped in the activation of human stem cells- which is pretty cool.

Who Should use Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil Masks?

Nearly everyone can benefit from a sea buckthorn berry oil mask treatment. How often you do depends on your skin type and also what you are trying to achieve.

Dry and Damaged Skin Types

You might want to do this treatment more than once a week if you have dry skin or are recovering from a sunburn. Sea buckthorn berry oil is great to help decrease the appearance scars, so if you have newer acne scars, the omega 7 found in this oil could help.

If you have broken skin, make sure to sanitize skin by washing before applying the oil. Don't worry, sea buckthorn berry oil is great for assisting the skin while healing. Just be sure to keep it clean before and after your treatment.

Aging Skin Types

Omega 7 and the rest of the lipids found in sea buckthorn berry oil can help plump, hydrate, and help repair aging or wrinkling skin. If your skin is on the dry side, try twice a week. If it's on the oily side, try it once a week to start.

Oily Skin Types

Even oily skin types can benefit from sea buckthorn oil treatments. Did you know that in many cases, oily skin is caused by dry skin overcompensating?

Try to blend in some sea buckthorn seed oil into your mask. The linoleic acid in the seed oil is especially good for oily and sensitive skin types. Plus, combining the oleic acid in berry oil will help the seed oil penetrate deeper into your skin. Check out this post for more details on how to do a seed oil mask.

Start out by trying this mask once a month. You can do it more often, but just exercise caution as oily skin types can also be sensitive and or acne prone.

Worried that sea buckthorn oil might clog pores? Don't worry, sea buckthorn oil only scores a 1 on the comedogenic scale, which classifies it as non-comedogenic. This means it's unlikely that sea buckthorn oil will clog your pores.

Using the berry oil internally will also help balance oily skin types from the inside out over time. Try our Omega 7 Complete as an internal supplement companion. If you're not ready to try pure oil on your oily skin, start with our Facial Cream. It's perfect for anyone who is looking for balanced skin.

Pampered People

Even if you're already happy with your skin, sea buckthorn berry oil is a lux treatment that can keep your gorgeous skin happy. Try doing this treatment once or twice a month.

Sea buckthorn berry oil mask step 1

Step 1

Start with only a drop of sea buckthorn berry oil on your fingertips. A little goes a long way, trust us.

Massage the oils right into the skin on your face, paying special attention to areas that need help.

Step 2

Just relax! You need to give the oil time to absorb into your skin, so chill for about 20-30 minutes.

Don’t do this treatment right before you rush out to work in the morning, give yourself a chance to relax and leave time to really let it soak in.

You can leave the oil on your skin for as long as you like, but start with 20 minutes.

Step 3

Either wipe off or wash off the excess oil with warm soapy water. Everyone’s skin will absorb the berry oil mask slightly differently.

Some have reported that their skin sucks up every drop but most will find that there will still be an orange glow and a thin layer of left over oil.

Notes:

Wash off any access oil before you go to sleep, especially on light colored bed clothes.

While some customer's have told us that they can sleep with the oil on their skin without incident, you're better off cleaning up before bedtime.

The oil washes out surprisingly well but you don’t want to take a chance with your favorite comforter!

Customize for Best Results

Since everyone's skin is different, feel free to customize your face mask. Try adding a bit of sea buckthorn seed oil, and see how pairing topical treatments with internal supplements helps your skin.

We always recommend starting slow to see how your skin responds. Sea buckthorn oils are balancing for many skin types and are very gentle oils, even when undiluted. So, experiment with a little at a time to see what's best for your individual skin type. Good luck and enjoy your journey to better skin!
