Spring is just around the corner! Finally, you will be free to go for walks, work in the garden and best of all- soak in the wonderful sunshine. Like any other season, some common health issues can arise. Here are some spring health tips to keep you rolling all the way to summer!

Ashtma/Allergies

Asthma and allergies cause inflammation in the body. Sufferers of these conditions knows that it helps to take a daily allergy pill. Allergy and asthma sufferers may also benefit from anti-inflammatory substances too. Add sea buckthorn oil to your everyday routine. It can support healthy inflammation response in the body. The natural vitamin E that occurs in sea buckthorn oil is a great help too. Also, seek foods that help decrease inflammation in the body. Some of these include pineapple, papaya, green leafy veggies and turmeric.

Pulled Muscles

Did you get so excited that it was warm outside that you ran an extra mile? Good for you- but ouch, did you push a bit too much? Spring time always marks an increase of sports related injuries. Make sure you warm up before you hit the trail or hop on your bike. A simple warm up before you get going help protect your muscles from injury. Do a five minute jog followed by five minutes of stretching before you run. Don't forget to also warm up before you go for a bike ride or join your friends for a game of soccer. This practice will not only warm up your muscles, but will help to get your heart pumping and blood flowing.

Cold/Flu

When you thought you made it through cold and flu season- you find yourself with a minor cold or flu. Many people tend to get sick when temperatures change. After a long winter season of fighting the germs, many will have a weakened immune system. Sea buckthorn seed oil will support immunity with antioxidants and fatty acids daily. Start before the season changes to avoid getting sick in the first place. Eat foods that help fight illness too. Fermented or cultured food is a great way to keep the sickness fighting bacteria in your gut happy. Try yogurt, kimchi or kombucha. Colorful vegetables are always a good idea- be sure you are getting at least two servings of them per day. Astragalus is a popular herb in China. It works wonders for boosting immunity and energy. This herb is growing in popularity in North America, so try to find a tea that contains it.

Maintain your Sleep Schedule

Almost everyone in the US has to deal with Daylight Savings and our annual “Spring Forward”. Our sleep habits have a very big effect on our health and general well-being. Losing an hour every morning can be quite jarring. Preparing ahead for the time change will make your transition smooth. Make sure you are getting plenty of sunlight each day. Another way to ensure a great night’s sleep is to get at least 30 minutes of exercise. Make sure you do it during the morning or day time hours. Make sure your workout isn’t too close to bed time- because that may energize you more. At night time it’s important to make sure that you aren’t exposing yourself to bright indoor lights. Leave your phone and tablet outside of the bedroom before you try to sleep. Go to bed an hour earlier starting one week before the time change. Finally, buy ear plugs and an eye mask to help you sleep through the night without disruption.

With a little bit of precaution, you can stay healthy all spring. As with many things in life, preparing ahead can make a difference in the results you see. Get out there and enjoy this beautiful season!
