Sustainability – Our farmers practice sustainable harvesting methods. The berries are harvested once they have reached maturity and allowed to re-fruit the following year. Only the minimum number of branches and leaves necessary are removed, leaving the majority of the plant intact, to continue to grow for the next season’s harvest. These practices allow for healthy trees and a sustainable source of income for the farmers.
Soil Erosion – Sea buckthorn is a hearty shrub that is a natural defense against erosion from wind and water. A nationwide survey in China found that almost 100 million inhabitants may lose their land within 35 years if the current erosion rate remains steady. The South Western section of China in particular is being hit the hardest. In 2011, SeabuckWonders’ manufacturing facility conducted a joint effort with the local government to plant 500,000 sea buckthorn trees on the erosion-prone hillsides in Tibet.
